Capital Clean Up Campaign – Background

The Capital Clean-up Campaign will run from 12 May – 23 June 2010, with following years taking place within the same period in the run up to the London Olympics. The campaign is similar to the successful Challenge Manchester project delivered in Manchester since the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

The aim of the campaign is to get people involved in making improvements to their local environment and taking longer term ownership and pride in their area.

The wider objectives of the campaign are:

Children taking part in the Capital Clean Up campaign

An advisory group was established in 2006 to steer the campaign and is made up of representatives from the cleaner, safer and greener sectors in London including local authorities, Keep Britain Tidy, Greater London Authority, Government Office for London, London Councils, London Probation, Metropolitan Police and Love London.

The campaign will include special projects delivered by local authorities in addition to events organised through agencies across the cleaner, safer, greener spectrum in the voluntary and community sectors. Projects and events may already be planned or arranged especially for the campaign.

Suggestions of potential areas of work include:

The proposed campaign aligns with the priorities of the London Anti-Social Behaviour strategy implementation plan and, therefore, maintains the momentum in tackling ASB in London. Furthermore, the campaign meets the objectives set in both the Government Report 'London's Challenge for 2012: Building on Successes' regarding delivery of a 100 days Clean-Up for London and the London 2012 Candidate File’s Theme 5: Environment and meteorology which states that London will "instigate a national clean-up campaign to tackle litter and graffiti".
