The Capital Clean Up was launched in fine style on a glorious spring day on March 8th with a number of events taking place in and around the London Borough of Southwark.
The day started with volunteers, street wardens and staff from the London Borough of Southwark and London's leading waterways charity Thames21 cleaning up the Thames foreshore adjacent The Tate Modern. Almost a tonne of rubbish was cleared from the foreshore which was removed by the Port of London's Driftwood vessel which had been beached during the event and provided a fitting backdrop to the event.
The launch was also given the star treatment by non-other than former BBC Political Editor and now Sunday AM presenter Andrew Marr who was more than happy to pose for a few pictures supporting the launch in between filming a new series on the Millennium Bridge!
The day finished on a high at Keyworth Primary School where children undertook a litter pick of the school's grounds and recorded their findings as part of Southwark's Junior Street Leaders Programme and the Eco-Schools Programme.
The London Sustainability Weeks Motivating and Networking Pre-launch took place last Wednesday the 14th of March at the London Living Room in City Hall, the venue was donated by the Mayor of London. The launch consisted of workshops followed by the official launch of LSW 2007 and concluding with a panel of speakers.
