Ealing Council is spending more than £3 million this year to spruce up the borough. As one of the Council's top three priorities, 'Cleaner Streets' spending has been given a major boost over the past year. As part of a package of extra investment in environmental services in 2007/08. The new funding will mean many more streets will be cleaned every day instead of twice a week. The areas around the borough's rail and Tube stations will be cleaned twice daily in the morning and again in the afternoon, so they will be tidier when commuters arrive home. The council is also funding 50 new Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) to help Ealing Council and the police fight crime and anti-social behaviour.
Residents are also doing their bit to clean up the borough by acting as the Council's eyes and ears on the streets. This year 250 new volunteers joined the Council's 'Streetwatcher' scheme. As part of its efforts to make Ealing a cleaner, and more pleasant place to live and visit the Council runs a rolling programme of weekly Partnership Taskforce Days. Under this initiative, officers from across the Council and partner agencies like the Police focus their efforts on a specific area of the borough to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour problems. Council organised activities carried out and planned during the 100 day Capital Clean-Up period includes Partnership Task Force Days, Community Payback Days and a Streetwatcher Conference for over 150 local people.

The National Maritime Museum moves outdoors and embarks on an environmental crusade to help clean up the Thames at Greenwich on Sunday 3 June 08.45 – 11.30 (low tide at Greenwich). Get friends and family involved and help us pick up plastic bags, dig up shopping trolleys and discover archaeological treasures on the north shore of the Thames at Greenwich.
The event is in partnership with Thames21, an environmental charity which works with communities and volunteers across London to bring its waterways back to life. They provide the expertise, wellies, gloves, socks and health and safety training, so there is no excuse for not getting involved. The meeting point is the north entrance of the Greenwich foot tunnel at Island Gardens. Children are very welcome but anyone under 16 must be accompanied by a supervising adult. The Museum cannot bear any responsibility for loss or injury.
Free - but booking required so we know how many pairs of wellies to provide!

The London Borough of Newham is working in partnership with Newham Council staff and Metropolitan Police officers. Operation Street Pride is aimed at improving streets and follows on from a very successful pilot in High Street North and East Ham.
It includes a crackdown on shopkeepers who use the pavements to sell illegally, unlawful trade waste disposal, planning breaches, sale of counterfeit goods, fly posting, illegal parking, begging, touting, litter and fly tipping. To achieve this, Council staff have joined forces with the local Safer Neighbourhood Teams. Islington Council held their latest Greener, Cleaner, Safer Day at Finsbury Park in April as part of their Capital Clean up programme.
The event, one of a number taking place between 8th March - 15th June in various locations throughout the borough, demonstrates the Council's commitment to partnership working to achieve a greener, cleaner Islington, with contributions from partners both within and also outside of the Council including London Probation and the Metropolitan Police.
As well as a general clean up of the Finsbury Park area, the Council’s Area Response Teams deep cleansed the pavements and removed graffiti while Community Payback removed weeds and detritus.
Also on site was a Street Environment Services stall manned by officers who talked to residents about recycling awareness and good waste disposal practice.
Greener, Cleaner, Safer Days are just some of the events that have already taken place in Islington as part of the 100 day campaign.
The next Greener, Cleaner, Safer Action Days will take place at Highbury Fields (15 May) and Chapel Market (23 May))

In the previous e-bulletin we incorrectly stated that offensive, racist or abusive graffiti is removed within 4 hours in Wandsworth. This should have read 24 hours. Apologies for any confusion caused.
