Westminster City Council has worked in partnership with the Probation Services and the Metropolitan Police Safer Neighbourhoods teams during the Capital Clean Up Campaign on a variety of projects within the City. The purpose of which was to get people involved in making improvements to their local environment and taking longer term ownership and pride in their area. Westminster has also worked across a number of different departments to deliver ensure each project succeeded including CivicWatch, cleansing, city guardians teams, dog warden, youth offending team, anti-graffiti and flyposting team and street environment managers.
A number of joint initiatives with the Probation Service and Westminster Youth Offending Team saw the clean up of a neglected car park and a garden area being dug up for the children's nursery in Broadley Street Gardens, Church Street which will now help the children learn more about gardening and planting.
In the Bloomfield Mews area the Probation Service, anti graffiti team, cleansing team and Street Environment Managers worked together to remove graffiti, fly-tipping to improve local environmental quality.
Finally, in the Bayswater area City Guardians, cleansing teams, Street Environment Managers and the City's dog warden pulled together to identify dog fouling hotspots to undertake enforcement, education and cleansing activities.

Richmond upon Thames Council has joined forces with, amongst others, Richmond Housing Partnership (RHP) and the Richmond Police Safer Neighbourhood Teams to organise spruce ups around the borough. The agencies are coming together to try and reduce litter, graffiti and dog fouling, amongst other issues, as part of the Capital Clean Up.
During the Council's Clean, Green and Safe week in Hampton North Ward, a co-ordinated partner based clean up of the Deacons Walk area took place. This saw trees pruned, grass cut, weeds removed from the network of paths and roads in the area and litter picked. In late May, a week of activities will be undertaken around the Richmond Housing Partnerships' Edgar Road Estate in Heathfield Ward. Richmond Housing Partnership, Heathfield Ward Safer Neighbourhood Team and Richmond Council will work together to carry out a spruce up near the community centre on the site. This week will also see local residents and youngsters pull together to remove graffiti, tidy up overgrown vegetation and re-paint the exterior of the basketball/football court.
In April, the Council's Street Scene Enforcement team undertook its first targeted dog fouling operation. Officers spoke to local residents and handed out 'Responsible Dog Ownership' leaflets, and extensive signage was used in the area to raise awareness during the week. The education and awareness based operation led to a drastic reduction in the number of "deposits" left on the highway, improving the local street scene for residents and those using the school.
This year Richmond upon Thames' Recycling Team will be joining forces with the Council's new Sustainability Unit. They will be touring Richmond at fairs and events over the summer; on hand with practical advice on how residents can become greener, with tips on reducing and recycling rubbish, saving energy, plus much more!
If you would like to find out more about becoming a recycling champion or how you can get involved with or organise local clean up events visit www.richmond.gov.uk or phone 08456 122 660 to find out what is happening in your area.
The London Borough of Croydon is working in partnership with Council staff, Probation service and local residents to improve local environmental quality through a variety of projects during the Capital Clean Up.
In the Portland Road area of the borough the council, business community and local residents worked together to clean up Network Rail land as well as private land which reduced local environmental quality in the area.
The council's District Town Centre Managers have also assisted Streetscene in making a difference to particular locations during the campaign. Hayes Lane in Crystal Palace was cleared of unsightly unwanted items. Amber Rusk, District Town Centre Manager had this to say "the 100 day clean up challenge for the Haynes Lane was a great success. Thanks to 'Your Street' this business community had a real opportunity to make a difference to their operating landscape. Many thanks for all support given!"
Officers in Streetscene have also been engaging with community groups/ individual residents and local businesses through a clear up on the Shurublands Estate in Shirley. The Probation Service and Metropolitan Police Safer Neighbourhood Team were also involved in the clearance exercise which included the clearance of litter and flytipping within a privately owned area.
For more information please contact the Streetscene Team on 020 8726 6200.
London Sustainability Weeks: 3-17 June 2007 is London's greenest festival, celebrating projects and organisations that are making a real contribution to creating a more sustainable capital. London Sustainability Weeks provides London's residents, workers and visitors, of all ages, backgrounds and interests, the opportunity to explore and contribute to hundreds of events, showcasing sustainable projects from major campaigns to locally based events run by residents for residents. Events may vary hugely in their size or message, but what all have in common is that they are directly helping to make a cleaner, greener, healthier London.
This year's London Sustainability Weeks was launched at The Camden Green Fair on 3rd June. Other events range from schools concerts to organic food fairs, from naked cycle rides to pond dipping, from community clean ups to business seminars.
Now in its fourth year London Sustainability Weeks 2007 is providing over half a million of London residents, workers, visitors and media an opportunity to discover and experience the diversity and creativity of local action and community projects that are working to make the city's communities more sustainable. The Love London campaign works not only with local authorities and major campaigning groups, but is unique in its commitment to promote and assist small, community based, initiatives - with a particular emphasis on those which are run by and for residents in areas of high social and economic depravation.
