Litter picks are leisure for Londoners
Bikes, boats and shopping trolleys were just some of the unusual items removed from the canal in East London last week at the launch of the Capital Clean-Up Campaign.
Over 1000 people visited the Capital Clean-Up carnival at Graham Street Park, Islington, and helped to remove 5 bikes, a sunken boat and bags of litter from the nearby canal in a bid spruce up the area and support the campaign.
Many signed up to join one of over 200 events taking place across London as part of the campaign as well as enjoying the entertainment, food and stalls on offer.
Corinna from the Capital Clean-Up Campaign said; "The support we have had from the community is amazing - people are prepared to get stuck in and volunteer in projects such as this. Society is experiencing resurgence in traditional values and becoming more involved in local environmental issues is a big part of that."
Supported by; Keep Britain Tidy, London councils, the Metropolitan Police, and businesses including McDonald's and Enterprise, the six week campaign is now in its fourth year.
Since 2007 the levels of litter in London have decreased and the Capital Clean-Up Campaign is credited for helping to reduce this. It focuses on creating cleaner, greener communities in the long term by restoring people's ownership and pride in local areas.
