Lewisham is one step closer to being officially named the most spotless borough in Britain after becoming one of only two finalists in the prestigious Clean Britain Awards.
Steve Bullock, Mayor of Lewisham, announced the good news at a celebration event to mark all of Lewisham’s environmental achievements. Steve said: “I want to say a big thank you to everyone who has worked hard all year to achieve this nomination.
"I am delighted that all our hard work and dedicated efforts to make Lewisham a cleaner place for residents have paid off. "We're nearly there and now I’m asking all residents, shopkeepers and market traders to help us win by making sure all rubbish is put in bins and shop fronts and market places are kept clear from mess."
Lewisham and Ipswich are the only two boroughs in the town category across the country to have reached the finals for the Clean Britain Awards. Over the next few months Lewisham streets will be inspected at random by ENCAMS to monitor the cleanliness of the streets. The winner of the cleanest borough in Britain will be announced on 13 March 2007.
The celebrations also focussed on the other achievements of Lewisham’s Environment Team such as the New Statesman New Media Award, London in Bloom and the Green Flag Awards.
