Hackney Council's innovative campaign to recruit Street Leaders has won a national award.
The 'Join the Street Leaders' brochure won best leaflet category of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations awards in Liverpool on September 28.
Street Leaders are volunteers who report environmental or community safety problems in Hackney. They are fully supported by the Council, with regular meetings and newsletters.
Each member is provided with a pack of materials, like reporting cards, they need to carry out their role as effectively as possible.
Councillor Alan Laing, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said:
"Street Leaders are really valued extra eyes and ears for the Council. Whether it's reporting graffiti or dumped rubbish, their input really helps make Hackney cleaner and safer. We are delighted that the materials produced for our Street Leaders have been recognised in this way."
The judges comments were:
"Hackney's leaflet has a clear, inclusive design and is very functional. The characters created for the leaflet and the rest of the campaign are very engaging, and are good value for money as they can be easily recycled. The campaign had good results, as 86 volunteers came forward to become 'Street Leaders'."
