Islington cleans up green award - Councils honoured at ceremony

Capital Standards Green Award

24 March 2009

The London Borough of Islington has received a prestigious accolade at the first ever Capital Standards awards ceremony.

Islington was named the winner of the Capital Standards Award for improving environmental quality.

The category, sponsored by Veolia Environmental Services, saw the boroughs of Camden and Richmond come second and third respectively.

Another local authority with plenty to celebrate was the London Borough of Hackney which received the award for innovation in improving local environmental quality. The honour, sponsored by Enterprise Environmental Services, was in recognition of Hackney’s recent business enforcement activities.

Environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy sponsored the category for partnerships in improving local environmental quality which was won by London Probation and Safer Neighbourhood Teams for their Community Payback project.

Capital Standards manager Oliver Jones said: “The Capital Standards Awards have been introduced as a way of recognising the dedicated and innovative environmental work that is taking place around London.

“We send our warmest congratulations to all the winners and runners-up - as well as to the many other organisations and individuals who are striving to make the city an even better place to live.”

“We would also like to thank all our sponsors whose generous support has made the awards possible.”

Capital Standards is a partnership between London local authorities, Keep Britain Tidy and other organisations.

A Capital clean-up will take place every spring between now and 2012. It will meet objectives for tackling graffiti and litter as set out in the Government report ‘London’s Challenge for 2012’. For 2009 the campaign will run from 29th April to 5th June.
